Psyllium husk is a classified fiber that acts as a gentle, bulk forming laxative. Similar to other soluble fibers, it passes through the small intestine without being completely broken down or absorbed. Once in the large intestine it absorbs water and becomes a viscous compound that is also known to relieve diarrhea and help reduce triglycerides, cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure levels.

Psyllium is used as a form of dietary supplement, taken regularly as part of a healthy diet and is available in husk, capsules, granules or powder form. It is derived from the seeds of the Plantago ovata plant.
